A "desserte" or "console-desserte" is a small, tall piece of dining room furniture with multiple trays, placed along a wall and used to hold objects or dishes during meals. The desserte was invented in the 18th century to avoid the need for servants when entertaining friends. Servants were suspected of listening in on conversations and, above all, repeating them.
In the second photo, you can see that the top lifts up to reveal white marble. You can place it in your dining room, of course, but it would also be perfect in an entrance hall or hallway.
